Ingredients
Scale
Vegetables and Bread
- ½ cup broccoli florets
- 3 slices whole wheat bread, cubed
- 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes with basil, garlic, and oregano, drained
Proteins and Dairy
- 8 slices deli-style protein, shredded
- ¼ cup shredded pepper jack cheese
- 4 eggs
- ¼ cup heavy whipping cream
Seasonings
- 1½ teaspoons garlic powder
- Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare baking dish. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9-inch square casserole dish to prevent sticking during baking.
- Steam the broccoli. Fill a saucepan with water just below a steamer insert and bring to a boil. Add the broccoli florets, cover, and steam until tender, about 2 to 4 minutes, then set aside.
- Combine main ingredients. In a large bowl, mix together the steamed broccoli, cubed whole wheat bread, drained diced tomatoes with herbs, shredded deli-style protein, and shredded pepper jack cheese.
- Prepare the egg custard. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with heavy whipping cream, garlic powder, salt, and ground black pepper until fully combined.
- Mix custard with vegetable and protein mixture. Pour the egg mixture into the bowl containing the broccoli and bread mixture and stir gently until evenly incorporated.
- Assemble and bake. Transfer all of the mixture into the prepared casserole dish, spreading it out evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for about 35 minutes or until the eggs are fully set in the center and the top looks slightly golden.
- Cool and serve. Allow the strata to cool for 3 to 5 minutes after baking, then slice into portions and serve warm.
Notes
- You can substitute deli-style protein with cooked sausage, ham, or vegetarian alternatives as desired.
- For a sharper flavor, consider using cheddar cheese instead of pepper jack.
- Ensure the diced tomatoes are well-drained to prevent the strata from becoming soggy.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 2 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
- Try adding other vegetables such as bell peppers or mushrooms for more variety.
